Men's soccer team shuts out Daytona State on the road

For the second straight year the Eastern Florida State College men's soccer team spoiled Homecoming at Daytona State College.

The Titans defeated the Falcons 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to wrap up second place in the Region 8 Conference.

And it happened quick as Daytona State's goalkeeper came out and the ball came across to Jai-Zel Smith DeShields who finished it to give the Titans a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest.

Four minutes later a Daytona State turnover gave Sebastian Joffre a look and he didn't miss, hitting it into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.

From there it was all defense as the Titans kept Daytona State College at bay the entire night.

"That was the game plan going in, we have said all year we are incredible strong in the back and we knew we just had to work hard and have the right mentality and if we could do that, play with that team spirit, we know we can go far," Eastern Florida State College men's soccer coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. "It has been there but it has been a process and we havetaken some lumps this season for sure but to come up here and get a 2-nil win against a fantastic team and get a clean sheet over 90 minutes is fantastic."

The back line of Rhys Myers, Tajay Reid, Moussa Gueye, Cedrik Hertes, Perrie Nascimento and goalkeeper Nour Moaoui made a couple of great saves to keep the shutout. The defense really stepped up when the Titans went to 10 men after a red card.

"We have stuck together and been a strong back four. We are a dominant force, a strong force that has conceded just three goals in six conference games this season and we love defending," Myers said. "This year has been a roller coaster ride but today we came in and found a way to win."

The Titans will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday night against Watford Academy US at 6 p.m. By finishing second they will play the winner of the Daytona State-ASA Miami playoff game at Titan Soccer Complex in two weeks.
