Men's soccer team falls on last-minute goal

For 89 minutes the Eastern Florida State College men's soccer team battled Daytona State College to a scoreless draw.

But with 51 seconds left, Daytona State College scored on a shot the went off the post and into the back of the net to claim a 1-0 victory in a Region 8 Conference match Wednesday night.

"I thought it was a fantastic advertisement for junior college soccer, two fantastic teams who fought right to the final whistle and I can't fault my guys at all, I thought they were excellent tonight. We followed the game plan and just couldn't get that goal tonight to take us to victory," Eastern Florida State College men's soccer coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. "We will see them again at their place and hopefully again in the playoffs to show what we can do. I am really proud of the effort from the boys."

The Titans, who are No. 18 in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, had some good chances in the first half but one shot hit the post and a couple others were stopped by Daytona State College goalkeeper Carlos Melendez.

"We had some really, really good opportunities," Twelvetrees said. "It is always hard in this game when you don't finish those chances, they often get one on the other end. We just have to keep moving in this direction, it has been a process and I think we made big strides today and we will keep improving as a team and hopefully be playing our best futbol in the end of the season."

The Titans will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina to play Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday morning before hosting ASA Miami next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
