Men's golf team places fourth in Titan Winter Invitational

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team placed fourth in the Titan Winter Invitational Tuesday at Suntree Country Club.

The Titans shot a 299 in the final round to place fourth with 889 for the three-round tournament.

Sophomore Thomas Matthews shot a 72 in the final round to place in a tie for fourth place at 216. Teammate Sean McGinty finished tied for 14th at 6-over for the tournament. Josh Stern finished tied for 21st, Ryan McMillian tied for 26th and Pontus Torgner shot a 241.

"I didn't know what to expect, we have struggled for much of January in practice and we had a pretty good second round, which is something to feed on but the first and third rounds look pretty identical," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell. "We have some work to do. We are way better than the score indicates but that is what it is right now."

Keiser University shot a tournament-best 286 on Tuesday to win the tournament with an 870 over the three rounds. Tim Nielson shot the low score of the day, shooting a 67 to place third individually. Teammate Car Didrik M. Fosas placed second with a 213.

Bethune-Cookman's Marcus Sundlof played a bogey-free final round for a 68 to win the individual title, shooting 7-under for the tournament.

Individually, Drew Lanier finished tied for 17th, Ben Ramos tied for 21st and Josh Yang finished tied for 37th.

"I look forward to playing again in two weeks, so the good news is we have some information from this and can get back to work," Howell said. "It was a very competitive tournament, Keiser is a terrific team. If you look at their fall results they were really good. Embry-Riddle has jumped leaps and bounds. If you look at the top half, some really good teams were here competing."

The Titans will travel to Alabama for the Coastal Alabama Spring Invitational on Feb. 17-18.
