Men's golf team opens fall season Monday in Alabama

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team will open the fall season Monday morning for the first round of the Dan York Memorial Golf Tournament at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper, Alabama.

The Titans head into the fall season ranked No. 5 in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division I preseason poll after finishing tied for seventh in the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament at Duran Golf Club in Viera.

Six members of that team are back for the Titans, four competed in the national tournament.

"We had a good year last year, we won four times but had three bad weeks last year and unfortunately one of them was the national tournament," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "This is as old of a team as I have had in a while, there is a lot of leadership there but at the same time lets go play golf and lowest score will win."

Eastern Florida State College will get its first look at the competition in the Region in Alabama as Wallace State hosts the event. One of the teams scheduled to be there is defending national champion Central Alabama.

"Going to a different venue that we have not been to before, but Wallace State is a tournament near and dear to my heart. We lost coach York last year and they have renamed the event after him which I could not be happier about. Wallace State is always tough at home and are the only team to have played on the course, so It will be a good test for everyone," Howell said. "I would like to think every time we go somewhere we are a team to be reckoned with."

Thomas Matthews, Ben Ramos, Ryan McMillan and Sean McGinty along with freshman Drew Lanier will compete in the opening event which begins Monday with the final round scheduled for Tuesday.
