Men's golf team in fifth place after two rounds at national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team is in fifth place heading into the third round of the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament at Duran Golf Club.

The Titans stumbled over the final three holes, shooting eight over between 16 and 18 and finished 2-under in the second round and trail Indian Hills Community College who shot 18-under in the second round and are at 25-under for the tournament.

"It's a little disappointing, we were on the cusp but again didn't really have that fourth score and then backed up a bit coming in. The guys are playing hard, that is not the issue," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell.

The Titans finished eight over as a team in the final three holes of the day

Sophomore Beck Fox and freshmen Ben Ramos and Sean McGinty each shot 2-under in the second round.

Fox is tied for third overall at 7-under for the tournament.

McGinty shot 4-under on the back nine to finish his round at 2-under and had an eagle on the par-5 11th hole, hitting a 3-iron to within three feet and sunk the putt for eagle.

"That was the spark of my round, sometimes you just hit one good shot and make a putt, and everything starts falling," McGinty said. "Coming off the front nine I was two over, so I needed to battle back."

McGinty made just one birdie in the first round, shooting a 78 but went to the putting green after the round and found something in his stroke.

On Wednesday, the freshman from Orlando finished with four birdies and an eagle.

"I came in knowing I had to make birdies, I only had one in the first round so I worked on my putting and just started making putts today," McGinty said.

Ramos finished with a 2-under 70 in the second round and is tied for seventh overall at 6-under.

The Titans will tee off at 12:30 p.m. in the third round of the national tournament.
