New Mexico Junior College leads national tournament after first round

New Mexico Junior College came back out after waiting out the rain for over three hours and finished the round of the day at Duran Golf Club, shooting 11-under 277 at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament in Viera, FL.

The Thunderbirds were led Liam Duncan who had five birdies without a bogey to finish tied for first at 5-under 67. Teammates Julius Kreutzer and Zhane Chan each shot 3-under while Andrew Ni was even par.

Nine teams did not finish the first round due to the weather and will finish the round at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday with the second round also teeing off in the morning.

Midland Community College and Indian Hills Community College are tied for second at 7-under in Viera.

Indian Hills golfer Joe Hodgson made one of the two eagles of the day, putting his approach shot from around 150 yards out in the hole on No. 8. Hodgson is tied with Eastern Florida State College's Beck Fox and Duncan for first place individually.

Calhoun's Mac Murphy also made an eagle on the par 5, 15th hole.

"The golf course was out there for the taking today and New Mexico did a nice job," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said.
