Men's golf team ready for District Preview in Illinois

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team will compete in the NJCAA District Preview in Marion, Illinois beginning Monday.

The Titans, who finished fourth in the first fall event of the season, have had a chance to work on a few things as they prepare for the district preview.

"Our focus after the Wallace State event was cleaning up our iron play into par 4's as the statistics showed some issues in that area," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "This past week the team looked good in qualifying."

The five players qualifying to make the trip to Illinois are sophomore Beck Fox along with freshmen Thomas Matthews, Josh Stern, Ryan McMillan and Sean McGinty.

Matthews is coming off a top-five finish at Wallace State and coach Howell has been impressed with how the freshmen have adapted to the college game.

"Composure looks good among all of them. Good event for all four to make a long trip and take their games on the road to compete," Howell said. "The group performed well at Wallace State and have qualified well again this week with Sean McGinty making his first trip. Tom Matthews and Josh Stern have been solid since arriving and Ryan McMillan shows signs of good play after a consistent first outing at Wallace State."

The two-day tournament begins Monday morning. The Titans will host their only event of the fall on Oct. 8-9 at Duran Golf Club in Viera.
