Titans Tied for Eighth After First Day at Barry

Eastern Florida's men's golf team struggled in the first two rounds of Barry University's Buccaneer Invitational at Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Beach on Monday.

The Titans, the only NJCAA team competing against 14 four-year institutions, shot 290-283=573 to tie for eighth place.

Lynn University leads at 275-285=560.

Brad Bawden led the Titans with a 71-69=140 to tie for 11th. Kerry Sweeney shot 71-74=145 to tie for 35th; Michael Keymont shot 76-69=145; Tyler Bennett shot 72-73=145 and Corey Herman 77-72=149 to tie for 66th.

The tournament, the final one of the regular season, concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.

"The guys played hard all day but we got off to a poor start in the morning round and hung in there to salvage 290," said Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell.

"The afternoon round was the opposite as we got off to a very good start but did not finish it off. With six holes to play we were six under par and let it get away to finish one under par (283) a good comeback after the morning round.

"But at this level we can't spot teams like Lynn, Barry, Johnson & Wales too many shots. The competition is excellent. We start out first tomorrow morning and if we can post a low number early you never know what might happen."
