Men's basketball team loses in double overtime

The Eastern Florida State College men's basketball team falls short in double overtime Saturday in an exciting game at Titan Field House.

Miami Dade hit enough shots in the second overtime to pick up the 85-80 victory over the No. 24 Titans.

The Sharks came out hot, taking a 19-4 lead in the first nine minutes of the contest. The lead would grow to 20 with five minutes remaining but Reggie Hill took over in the final four minutes, scoring 10 of his 12 first-half points as the Titans finished the first half on a 14-3 run to head to the locker room down nine, 37-28.

Roberts Berze and Brody Boyer each hit 3-pointers as part of a 9-0 run to get the Titans to within five points in the first five minutes of the second half. It would remain tight throughout the second half and in the final minute Brandon Garcia had a couple of baskets that brought it within one point.

Down three, the Titans called timeout with 15 seconds left and once again Brody Boyer got the ball and once again, he hit the 3-pointer to tie the game. He was fouled but missed the free throw to send the game to overtime.

It looked like the Titans would win in the first overtime as Berze put the Titans up three with 35 seconds left. But Miami Dade would hit a 3-pointer to send the game to double overtime.

The second overtime saw big shots on both sides but down the stretch it was Miami Dade who made the key baskets behind D'Monte Brown who had 43 points.

Eastern Florida State College was led by Berze, who had a career-high 29 points including five 3-pointers while Reggie Hill had his second straight double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Justin Reid finished with eight points and eight rebounds in the game.

The Titans (7-4) will hit the road next week, traveling to Pennsylvania for a couple of games. The men will play unbeaten and sixth-ranked Harcum College on Friday at 7 p.m. and then ASA Brooklyn Saturday at 2 p.m.
