Baseball team defeats Indian River State College to win series

The Eastern Florida State College baseball team held on to defeat Indian River State College Saturday to win the series.

The Titans, who improved to 2-4 in the Southern Conference, picked up the 10-9 win Saturday at Bruce Bochy Field to win two of three against the Pioneers.

Starting pitcher Brady Guthrie had one of the best starts of his season, pitching six strong innings with a season-high nine strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.

"I had my slider and changeup working today and I just threw it across the plate and trusted my defense," Guthrie said.

While Guthrie was putting up zeroes on the scoreboard, the Titans offense jumped all over Pioneers starter Charles Hanson.

Eastern Florida State College would score three times in the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Wilfredo Maldanado and then add six more in the second inning as Eddiel Tolentino hit a two-run triple and then Adrian Dominguez hit a two-run home run, his second home run in as many days as the Titan batted around in the inning.

Up 9-0, Guthrie cruised through five innings allowing just one hit. The Pioneers started to hit in the sixth and Cameron Carroll hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 9-2.

Indian River State College would score three times in the seventh, once in the eight to make it 9-6.

Eastern Florida State College would load the bases in the bottom of the eighth and get a huge run when Dominguez walked, scoring Zach Taylor.

Indian River would score three times in the top of the ninth but Matt Dadlani would end the threat and pick up the save.

Tolentino had three hits and drove in three runs for the Titans.

Eastern Florida State College will host Warner University JV at 5 p.m. Monday before opening a conference series with Florida Southwestern Wednesday.
