Baseball team falls to Indian River State College in 10 innings

The Eastern Florida State College baseball team fell to Indian River State College in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at Bruce Bochy Field.

The Titans, who are now 10-11 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Conference, allowed two runs in the top of the 10th as the Pioneers won 4-2.

Starting pitcher Darien Smith allowed two runs in the first inning and then retired 22 of the next 23 batters he faced, striking out 11 in seven strong innings.

Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, AJ Mathis hit the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to tie the game 2-2. It was Mathis' first home run of the season. The freshman left fielder almost homered in the third inning, but it hit on the warning track for a triple.

He was one of five players with two hits for the Titans as Tyler Isenberg, Alejandro Rodriguez, Connor Leary and Jonathan Hubbard also had two hits in the game.

Tyler Vogel took the loss, allowing two unearned runs in an inning and a third.

The Titans will host the Florida State College at Jacksonville Monday at 4 p.m. at Bruce Bochy Field as the team takes a break in conference play. It is the first of three home games next week as they will host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday and ASA Miami on Friday.
