Baseball team falls to Miami Dade

The battle for the Southern Conference title tightened up over the weekend as Miami Dade College swept Eastern Florida State College in a three-game series.

The Titans lost 6-2 on Saturday as Miami Dade scored four times in the final three innings and leave Bruce Bochy Field tied for the conference lead at 9-6.

Eastern Florida State College got on the board first as leadoff hitter Steven Lugo singled and scored on Austin Bates' groundout to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Miami Dade would tie the game in the second inning and take the lead in the sixth inning.

Bates hit a double in the game and has a hit in 15 straight games for the Titans. Gabriel Vera hit a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, his first home run of the season.

Connor Brian struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs in a no-decision.

The Titans will open a three-game series with Indian River State College on Wednesday on the road before hosting the Pioneers on Friday night at 6 p.m.
