Baseball team comes back to beat Polk State

The Eastern Florida State College baseball team's bullpen came up big in a win against Polk State College at Bruce Bochy Field on Saturday.

Polk State College scored three times in the top of the first inning, but the Titans came back to post the 6-5 win and snap a three-game losing streak.

Down 3-0 in the second inning, Clayton Stanley doubled and scored on Chris Vervoordt's single. The Titans cut it to 3-2 when Steven Lugo tripled and scored on Alvaro Valdez' single.

The Titans opened things up in the fourth, scoring four times and taking the lead. Lugo had a two-run single and would later score as the Titans led 6-3.

Polk State's Nico Limoncelli hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-5.

But the Titans bullpen kept the lead as Daniel Acosta, Borris Villa and Andres Rodriguez combined to pitch 6 1/3 innings, allowing just Limoncelli's home run. Acosta picked up the win, while Rodriguez struck out five of the eight hitters he faced to record his second save.

"It was a great team win today," Eastern Florida State College baseball coach Jason Arnold said. "The relief pitchers did a great job picking up Ray after a tough start. We found a way to win which is what we're always talking about. Just find a way and I'm happy we did that today."

It is just the third time in the past 11 meetings that the Titans have beaten the Eagles.

Eastern Florida State College will be back at Bruce Bochy Field Sunday, hosting Lake Sumter State College at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
