Baseball team hammers Polk State

The Eastern Florida State College baseball team sent 12 hitters to the plate in the fifth inning, seven scoring as the Titans defeated Polk State 12-2 in seven innings Thursday night at Bruce Bochy Field.

Designated hitter Elian Merejo ended the game when he hit a 2-2 pitch over the scoreboard for a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was Merejo's second home run of the season.

The seven-run fifth inning was highlighted by back-to-back triples by Andres Ramos and Paul Castillo.

Cristian Sanjurjo finished with three hits and scored twice while Merejo and Kevin Silva each drove in three runs. Seven of the nine starters drove in a run in the game.

Cam Weinberger got his first start of the season and allowed one run over five innings to pick up his second win of the season. Weinberger struck out four in the game.

"Cam did not have his best stuff but he gave us a great chance, pitched out of a lot of jams and you aren't always going to have your good stuff but you need to go out and compete and he did a wonderful job," Eastern Florida State College baseball coach Jeff Tam said on WEFS-TV.

The Titans will head to Santa Fe College on Friday afternoon before hosting Drury University JV on Sunday evening at 6 pm. Admission is free to games at Bruce Bochy Field.
