Titans Eliminated From Tournament With 5-0 Defeat

After two gutsy victories Eastern Florida's baseball team was eliminated from the NJCAA District/FCSAA Tournament on Wednesday, falling 5-0 to Gulf Coast State in Lakeland.

The Titans, who scored 10 runs each in eliminating the College of Central Florida and St. Petersburg College, could not solve Gulf Coast freshman right-hander Alec Wisley who pitched a complete game six-hitter.

One bad inning did in the Titans. Right-handed sophomore starter Jake Walsh got the first two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning but then issued a walk.

An error and an infield single later and the bases were loaded for Gulf Coast sophomore Nick Nelson who hit a grand slam to left field for a 4-0 Commodore lead.

The Titans managed just four hits over their final four at-bats, two to open the eighth inning but a double play snuffed out the flame.

Freshman Sammy Duran had two hits, a double and single, for the Titans.

The Titans, who dropped their tournament opener 6-1 to nationally No. 1-ranked Santa Fe College, finished the season at 34-18. They finished second in the Southern Conference regular season, earning their first outright tournament berth under head coach Jeff Tam.
