Titans fall to Broward in 11 innings

BREVARD COUNTY, FL – It was a night of missed opportunities for the Eastern Florida State College baseball team, which lost 5-4 in 11 innings to visiting Broward College in a FCSAA Southern Conference game Thursday night at Bruce Bochy Field on the Melbourne Campus.

The Titans couldn't hold a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning and had runners on first and third with no outs in the bottom of the 10th, but couldn't score.

EFSC, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, fell to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Sammy Duran had two hits and Vinny Capra had a pair of doubles, including a two-run line drive in the bottom of the seventh that scored Jay Ciuro and Norberto Navarro to put EFSC ahead 4-3.

The Titans also got a solid effort from sophomore starter Blair Calvo, who struck out 10 and gave up five hits over seven innings.

EFSC scored a run in the bottom of the second inning, and another in the third, using their own aggressiveness to force Broward into making a pair of costly mistakes.

After Ian Lisle and Ciuro drew back-to-back walks in the second, Lisle attempted to steal third base and wound up coming into score on a throwing error.

The Titans made it 2-0 an inning later when, after a double by Manny Rodriguez, Navarro laid down a bunt. Once again, the ball was thrown away by Broward and Rodriguez came all the way around to score.
Calvo, who had cruised through the first six innings, ran into trouble in the seventh. After a walk and a hit batter put Broward runners on base, he gave up a three-run, opposite field homer to JC Millan that put the Seahawks ahead 3-2.

With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th, the Titans got a double by Capra and a single by Rueben Garcia that put the winning run at third base. However, Broward reliever Jose Padro came on to strike out the side and end the threat.

Broward scored the winning run in the top of the 11th on a leadoff walk, a fielding error, a balk and a wild pitch.
The Titans will hit the road Saturday to play the University of Tampa JV team before returning home Sunday for a conference game against Hillsborough Community College at 2 p.m.
